Margaret DeForest's ceramics hobby became a family owned business in California in 1950. The company shut it's doors in 1970. DeForest of California is a company that
tried to go against the rising trend of Japanese products that started coming ashore about the same time as the company started. DeForest was apparently successful for at least
some time, as they stayed in business for twenty years and employing as many as 80 people at their California plant. The Deforest big and baby sister set came in yellow, pink,
turquoise, black and brown. The baby is so unique the way she jets off he wall. The set is real thick and heavy. There is no mark on them because they came in a box where the
label was on the box. The way DeForest does their eyes, even on their anthro pieces, is very unique. They are big eyes with a big black eyeball. No mistaking a DeForest piece
because of the eyes! Some people pass this set up because it is so "different" and often expensive due to it's rarity. Anyone that has owned this piece and seen it in person will
tell you it makes a very elegant statement on the wall in any color!
To the right and left are a examples of the reproduction mermaid sets I've made from Deforest molds. Click on the picture to look at all the other examples/colors I've
made this set in. I've made these in all different color and also made them with a porcelain finish rather than gloss. The red set I made with more an oriental look and Chinese Red.
